Reflection

Mercy Dankyi-Amoah
History of photojournalism
 Reflection

When I initially took this class I thought it was going to be an easy class, but I quickly came to realize it was going to be that easy and without a doubt this is by far the hardest class that I have taken, I found myself I struggled with the simplest of tasks often taking a considerably longer time to complete a task than the other students. I realized I was struggling when I missed my first assignment, and also trying to split my time between class and family it was very difficult for me. During this course, I struggled with this class not because I couldn't understand it but because I did not think it was going to be this involved. I think this course is for more of a person who is going into journalism, photography or any of the field that has to do with this course. I am used to reading books then do my research to back up what I have read, that was where my struggle was. There were many challenges that I faced with this class one was not being able to access the school library to be able to do my research and so I had to rely on my own way of research, I also didn't have the latest software on my computer so must of the time I was having issues with my computer which resulted in me completing most of my assignments at work the submitting it. I was not consistent with my work. Balancing a job and college coursework and a family is certainly challenging also.
Before this class I knew nothing about photojournalism what they have to go through on a daily basis to get the images and stories that we see and read about, I also learned the types of cameras and how far camera have come, I learned who invented the first camera and how it was used to take pictures.

I feel like nothing went well with this class because the moment I feel to understand the first assignment and I was made aware that I was falling the course then I started to panic so I did not take time to look at my work or read it through I just wanted to do it and hand it in so I get a grade for it even if my work it wasn't quality and I also did not want to fail this class. I knew I should have withdrawn from the class but I continued through because I thought I would improve. I think my moment of satisfaction was when I was able to complete an assignment and hand it in and get credit for it and also get the comments from my teacher on what I did right and what I did wrong. I feel that doing my research I try my best while researching given the resources that I have , but the problem is, I don't have the time to look through all that information do to the fact that I had to read other course materials as well so it didn't give me the opportunity to roughly look through my research. It was very hard for me to focus on my research that can have such vast topics. And I feel this is the main problem for me.
As far as blogging before this class I did not know what blogging is I had to do research on the web to find out what it was, I also had to ask people at work with the teenager to know what it. Although I understand how to now blog I think that I am able to use this in my future class, but it will not be part of what I will do on daily bases. Trying to understand what blogging is took me a while during this course moving forward I would not have any trouble should I take a course that requires the use of blogging, I think this semester was a bit of challenge for me because I also had another instructor say as part of the class we had to create a twitter account and I had no idea on how to do that as well, it is not that I don't know how to do the assignment I just don't see the relevance of these sites and what it has to do with school.
I realize a lot of the time I did not give credit to the site where I got my information from and now sitting back and reflecting now I know why it is most important to always give the proper credit, there's almost never a good reason not to properly credit the artist. Now looking back it feel as if I cheated them on their hard work by just taking the information and not giving them the credit that is due it wasn't intentional it was just me not paying attention.
overall I have learned a lot from taking this class, whether is blogging or photojournalist who risk their lives everyday to get us the news or images across the globe or the types of cameras that has been used over the decade this class was very interesting even if I did not pass it I would take it again without adding any other class to it and just focus on just this class. I feel that if I had manged my time  work and family properly and spend more time doing my home work I would have gain more knowledge from this class.

Final-Creative Experiential Exercise

At the beginning of this class we were asked to define what photojournalism means and in my first blog I defined as there were many ways of defining what it mean but my understand was differently but my initial research I understood as Based on my knowledge and research photojournalism is defined as a way of us keeping our history and preserving memories and it is also a way of telling story through pictures to provide us with information so we can understand what is going on the other side of the world. Photojournalist try to find stories to tell us that is meaningful, and would be interesting to us the reader, going back and to my old post I now realize what it to be a photojournalist, there is their ethical, moral, bias understanding to be able to report the news as it happens, and change the photos simply to want to tell their story although some people did.

The reason why it is important to know the history of photojournalism, I think like anything in history we need to keep records of it to preserve it history so we can reference it back. I think that it was just keeping memories alive and also reporting what is happening around the word and we should know more about photojournalism and the people who put their life at risk to get us the news. We should also keep looking in to this profession and their roles in history, I think that we should do more to protect our journalist because they put their lives a risk every time they go out on missions to tell their stories through their lens.

My “ah-ha moment for was when professor Nordell post two images which looked identical to each other and as I look close at that image I thought they looked similar yet different while both picture looked the same they were both taken in two different era, that gave me a little understanding of what photojournalism is.

When asked if I think photography would change the world, everyone has their own opinion about what this means to them. I said that photojournalism will changes the world in some cases we rely on the journalist to tell us what happening and here in our home state or across the ocean miles away it can also sway the opinion of the public. One example is an image that has changes the world is of this man falling from the towers during 9/11 this image captured this man falling to his death that tragic moment A person falls from the North tower of the World Trade Centre on September 11, 2001. it is an image that we as American will never forget and same way his family will never forget him.

over all during this class i had the opportunity to ready and look at my class mates photojournalist profile to see different carer path and  style each photojournalist took, it also made me realize and appreciate my class mates research they did. for example I liked Matthew Jones blog post in which he profiled Lynn Johnson where is mentioned that she what motivated her explained that her motivation is revolved around being a female in a male dominated profession. Johnson stated, “documenting women’s issues feels like aresponsibility as a woman photographer”.taken by Lynn Johnson

I also liked reading Bianca's profile on Xyza Cruz Bacani, I learned that she took photography so she and earn money to help her brother with his education, and she become more and more good at she realized that photography changes her life and in turn she can also change someone elses life she is quoted as saying http://www.interaksyon.com/article/107459/filipina-maid-in-hong-kong-now-a-scholar-for-new-york-based-photojournalism-foundation

In Brittany's profile  I learn how women photojournalist like Vyarawalla went through a lot to gain the respect that they need to work in this filed ans also learned that she was the first female photojournalist in India and how it wasn't easy for her family to understand and she was quotes as saying that, But even though her family’s traditional, conservative values may have dictated Homai’s attire, they were far more liberal and open-minded when it came to decisions regarding her life

  Creative Experiential Exercise
I think that being a photojournalist is being at the right place at the right time it can also be where you place the object in the photo to get the dramatic effect you want. it was really hard for me to get this pictures in the right moment with a moving vehicle and kids screaming in the back of the car,but i had to get the perfect picture I had to take the pictures a couple of time to get the one that i wanted. i used my cell phone to take this pictures below, like David Guttenfelder find that using your cell phone to take photos are great because you get to upload them on your computer instantly or send them to friends and family right way.

What motivates photojournalists

What motivates photojournalist are very different for each person some may do it for the fame and the chance to get their names recognized, others do it for the love of art while other photojournalist it because they want to and they can, other photojournalist do it of the fame and name recognition Greg Marinovich did it to let the whole world know what was going on in South Africa

Marinovich was bale to capture to tell the story of what was happened over there. his motivation was the let the rest of the world see what he was seeing and it times it was dangerous but he did it.

Bias and Photojournalsim

Image result for "Going Home", taken by Life Magazine photojournalist Ed Clark:

In Ed Clark "Going Home" I see Gram Jackson playing a song  "Going Home " on his accordion as President Frankly Roosevelt funeral passes by. in this photo I see man truly moved by the death of our President of the president who brought our country together as one people. this image shows  the sadness and emotion not just Jackson but the people surrounding him.

This image has a shallow depth, rule of thirds, subject's expression the black and white gives it the old vintage style look. it allows people to look closely a the expression of the people  and feel the pain in their eyes and faces.

Truth image: this image show a woman who has gracefully except her defeat in great strive, she looked sad that she lost but at the same time happy for her opponent. To me she looks confident and her smile speaks volume about her. she is very comfortable in the skin. This image was taken on the morning after she lost the election. according to professor Nordell  we must know the importance of publication that show us imagery   since the photo was taken by Jewel Samad of the AFP he was sent to capture images from this historical election, I am not sure if there is any bias here because of the fact that her was assigned to take the photos for AFP.  although the AFP is an international journalist new agency they cover more of the national new all over the world.

the obvious main subject: in this photo the main subject is Hillary Clinton and her lost, her concession speech,in the back ground is her husband, running mate.

Keeping it simple: The photographer just kept this image simple and the image make us focus on the Hillary Clinton.

This image makes you feel sad because of the fact that she did not win she would have made history as the first woman president,  the look in her face says it all, sad yet happy for the outcome of the election.

I think that image is not telling the whole truth, it has been in enhanced to dramatized the truth for viewers to see whats happening in Iraq. to me it looks like solders have been placed to make it look more according to https://www.vocabulary.com/dictionary/ bias is defined as a partiality that prevents objective consideration of an issue or situation
https://www.vocabulary.com/dictionary/bias#s33578

I chose this image because of the dark background, and its over dramatized  for the viewers

this images clearly show the power that these soldier have over the men on the floor

Ethics in Photojournalism

The NPPA has a set of guidelines/codes of conducts for journalist to follow https://nppa.org/code_of_ethics , there are about 9 codes that every photojournalist must abide by whether they are reporting from the front lines they must make sure that they are accurate in what they are reporting or taking pictures they should not change any thing about the image they have, distort it, also must make sure they respect their subject and give them dignity. in the case of one of TV journalist Brian William faking a war story

but despite all the rules and regulations that has been set in places so journalist  follow and they don't

break these rules some how it always happens all the time some journalism seem to think they can decide on what type of news that can report.according CBS news Brian Williams faked his 2003 Iraq war story "NBC "Nightly News" anchor Brian Williams says he falsely recounted a story that he was in a helicopter that was hit by ground fire in Iraq in 2003 in part because he was "scared" about the events that were unfolding around him." http://www.cbsnews.com/news/brian-williams-talks-about-false-iraq-war-story/

after his story was found to be true he was NBC put him on a six months suspension and and he was removed from his night time news position.

here is an example of an image that has been alter

my personal take on ethics is that we are each have the understanding of choosing the right way of telling or retelling of events that happens. after that story of Brian Williams came out that he lied he apologized to the public, his bosses, co,worker, but that time it was too late. although Brian Williams was only suspended and did not really face any sort of any permit punishment  but his reputation, principles, integrity was questioned by NBC and follow worker. At some point we all make mistakes as long as we recognized it and expect whatever consequences that follows.

History of photojournalism

Based on my knowledge and research photojournalism is defined as a way of us keeping our history and preserving memories and it is also a way of telling story through pictures to provide us with information so we can understand what is going on the other side of the world. photojournalist try to find stories to tell us that is meaningful, and would be interesting to us the reader, viewers. One website http://photography.lovetoknow.com/History_of_Photojournalism.

according to  Frank Luther Mott, historian and dean of the University of Missouri School of Journalism really became familiar after World War II (1939-1945). Germany's photo magazines established the concept, but Hitler's rise to power in 1933 led to suppression and persecution of most of the editors, who generally fled the country. Many came to the United States. and The time was ripe, of course, for the establishment of a similar style of photo reporting in the U.S. Henry Luce, already successful with Time and Fortune magazines, conceived of a new general-interest magazine relying on modern photojournalism. It was called Life, launched Nov. 23, 1936.
knowing the importance of photojournalism it helps us know our past and present we are able to go back and take a look at our past during the war, great depression, women getting jobs all this makes great history of journalism. all this are what makes photojournalism good we keep our past and present.

Can Photographs Change the World?

Yes photojournalism will change the world; we live in an age where everything is being captured on camera whether if it’s through a cell phone or through the lens of a professional camera. We have to report and capture the news as it happens, they also allow us to see and know what is going on around the world.
As we progress through the years and technology also progression photography and photojournalists are going to more needed than ever. Capturing what’s going around the world through the lens and then on print speaks volume.

One of the photography that has had an impact in my life is the shoot death of Trayvon Martin, Looking at the image of him in that hoody that picture capture the innocent of a child. Then I look at my child and think that is this going to happen to my child, his hits close to home for me because I have two young boys that I have to rise  and I often think about this case and the circumstances involving the of this young man. a lot of time we often don't here about such local news coverage, now that people have phones that have cameras things are no longer kept in the dark any more. Photograph and photojournalist going to places and capturing and videoing we are able to know and see what goes on the other side of states or the world.

here is a little information about Trayvon http://www.infoplease.com/biography/var/trayvonmartin.html

One of the first researchers to produce photographic images using silver halide chemistry was Schultze. As early as 1727, he formed metallic silver images by first reacting solutions of silver nitrate and white chalk and then exposing these solutions to light through stencils. Schultze's work was improved upon through the efforts of Louis Jacques Mandé Daguerre who, in 1837, developed a process for printing images on a silver coated copper plate. This type of printed image, called a daguerreotype in honor of its primary inventor, is made by polishing and cleaning a silver-coated copper plate and then reacting the silver coating with iodine vapors to form light-sensitive silver iodide. The silver iodide coated plate is then exposed to light through the optics of a camera that projects and focuses an image on the plate. In the ensuing reaction, the silver ions are reduced to silver metal. Finally, the plate is treated with mercury to produce an amalgam. In this type of print, the areas of the plate exposed to light appear white and the unexposed areas remain dark. The problem with this method was that it required long exposure times because the intensity of the image depends solely on the strength of the light forming the image.

doing a good cause

[Man with Anniversary Model Speed Graphic]
[Graflok Back, showing location of the distinguishing chromed sliders]

according to research photograph is an image made by a phot chemical reactions which records the impression of light on a surface lined with silver atoms.
researcher Pieter.S Myers a Photogravure is  was developed in the late nineteenth century as image making method making more permanent  and more reproducible than the existing silver-based photographic processes. photogravure, which was printed
in the past taking pictures was slightly different from today they had to capture an image, the way pictures had to be taken required a bit of process, setting up the camera making sure that you had enough coal or light to be able to take the perfect shot.
I look at my picture that I had my husband take today it only took him just a second to take this it did not require him to do a lot this an image of me doing the ALS walk.it did not require any process at all just simply turn the phone on then snap the picture to get the image I needed.
